Seven concentration tips
Have you been staring at your book for fifteen minutes without absorbing a single thing? Have you sneakily checked Snapchat four times and Instagram three times in the last hour? Okay, your concentration level is zero. With these tips, you’ll actually be able to focus on studying. Even later in the exam hall. Because focusing now means partying later!
Stick to a routine
Yes, it might take some getting used to. But during your final exams, go to bed at a fixed time and wake up at a fixed time. Keep a normal day-night rhythm. When you’re well-rested, concentrating becomes much easier. Are you a true night owl? One consolation: after your exams, you can party until the sun comes up 😉
1. Take a ten-minute break after every 45 minutes of studying. Don’t try to absorb hours of material in one go. Most people have a concentration span of about 45 minutes. After that, take a short ten-minute break.
2. Schedule the hardest subjects at times when you’re most productive.
3. Minimize distractions as much as possible.
4. Turn off your phone. If needed, hang an A4 sign on your door that says “Do Not Disturb” to prevent interruptions from your mom. If you’re working on a computer, close unnecessary browser tabs. Keep your workspace tidy and quiet. If outside noise bothers you—neighbors, a noisy sibling, or other disturbances—use earplugs. The best are sleep earplugs, as they block the most sound. You can also use them for a peaceful night’s sleep.
6. Give attention to distracting thoughts at the right moment.
7. Notice your mind wandering? Quickly jot down the thought and return your focus to your study material. Do one thing at a time and alternate studying with free time.
Good news! Cramming for exams isn’t the best strategy. Spread your study sessions across days and set clear goals for each day. Achieve your goals? Relax!
Good luck studying for your finals. And don’t forget to bring your earplugs to the exams! Every year, the LAKS receives complaints about noise: a neighbor chewing loudly, a nervous classmate clicking their pen, or the creaking shoes of a proctor. No one will disturb your concentration!
What to do about those annoying noise-makers during the exam?
